Hosted by the Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society, Patricia Essick will present “Remembering Curtis King: The Civil War’s Oldest Soldier”. Essick, a former OPL reference librarian and a Civil War enthusiast, will dress in period attire as she portrays herself as King’s second wife Matilda and relates the story of this amazing man, who at the age of 80, was mustered into the 37th Iowa Infantry, the Iowa Greybeards. King’s concern for our country’s future spurred him to enlist for service in 1862, earning him the distinction of becoming the oldest soldier to serve in the Civil War. Seven of his sons also served in the War, along with 20 grandsons and 5 great-grandsons. Please join us for a glimpse into the life of this fascinating man who remains today, 160 years after his death, still deserving of our respect and admiration for the great example he set for patriotism and selfless service. Free and open to the public, light refreshments will follow the program.
