Iowa artist Grant Wood sketched this house on a 1930 visit to Eldon and that summer depicted it as the backdrop for his world-famous painting, American Gothic. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the adjacent Center includes an exhibit room with history of the Gothic House and Grant Wood, a gift shop, and a media room with educational films. There are also props on hand so visitors can pose in front of the historic home and create their own American Gothic portrait.
The American Gothic House Center is open Wednesday - Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. The interior of the home is open for tours the second Saturday of the month, April through October from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
