During the mid 19th century, many Swedish immigrants began arriving in the new frontier land of Iowa. Confronted by many obstacles and hardships in their homeland they made the diffuclt journey to begin a new life in Amierca. Swedish immigrants began arriving in this community they call 'Bergholm' in 1847. When the first post office was established in 1870, the community became known as 'Munterville' in recognition of Swedish immigrant and prominent community leader Magnus Munter.

 

The monument depicts a Swedish family and honors those pioneers for the sacrifices they made.
