The current courthouse is Wapello County’s fourth building that has been used for court functions and county administration. The cornerstone was laid on September 28, 1892 and the five-story building was dedicated on May 17, 1894. Rough cut sandstone (rusticated stone) was used for the Richardson Romanesque style structure. A large clock tower was part of the original design; however, in 1950 the clock tower was removed and with it about 450 tons of bricks which alleviated a great deal of structural stress. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. It is part of the Central Park area which includes the Ottumwa Public Library and Ottumwa City Hall.
