Ottumwa is a melting pot of different cultures, and this is best exemplified by its diverse culinary scene. With more than 40 nationalities represented in the city, residents and visitors alike have access to a variety of authentic cuisine. Latin American
Ottumwa is a foodie's delight when it comes to Latin American cuisine. We have more than a dozen Latin restaurants and grocery stores that offer a wide variety of delicious food options. Mimi's is a popular local restaurant that serves mouthwatering tacos with a variety of fillings. If you're looking for pupusas, Juanita's Pupuseria is the place to go. There is also La Esperanza, which features fresh-baked bread and pastries. If you're in the mood for authentic Guatemalan cuisine, Garnacheria Y Taqueria Ebenezer is the perfect spot.
In addition to restaurants, we also have several local grocery stores that specialize in Latin products. Cerro Grande is a great place to find the freshest cuts of meat, and Tortillas Lupita sells tortillas made fresh daily. Whether you're looking for ingredients to make your own Latin dishes at home or you want to dine out for a delicious meal, Ottumwa has plenty of options to satisfy your cravings.
Asian
If you're a fan of Chinese cuisine, Jade Palace is the place to go in Southeast Iowa. You'll find a wide range of delicious and authentic dishes, all served with friendly and attentive service. If sushi is more your style, head over to Shiki Hibachi Sushi, where you'll find some of the best rolls in the region. And if you're looking for ingredients to take home and cook up your own feast, visit JM Asian Market or Golden Karen Grocery Store. Both have a wide range of fresh and packaged goods that will give your home cooking an authentic Asian flair.
Italian & Greek
If you're a fan of pizza, you've got to try Mike's Pizza & Steakhouse. Not only do they serve some of the best pizza in town, but they also serve a selection of pasta dishes, from classic spaghetti and meatballs to creamy fettuccine alfredo. And if you're in the mood to mix things up a bit, be sure to check out their Greek options.
African
Among Ottumwa's eclectic mix of cultures is a growing number of immigrants from African countries. Because of this, Ottumwa is home to two local grocery stores that specialize in African products, making it easy for them to find the ingredients they need to prepare traditional meals from home. The first store, Landryna Africa Food Business, is located on the corner of Second and Jefferson streets and offers a selection of spices, grains, and other staples commonly used in African cooking. The second store, Agape African American Market, is located on the corner of Second and Market streets and features a selection of groceries, clothing, and accessories.
Micronesia
Ottumwa might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Pacific Islander culture, but we are home to two stores that specialize in items from that region. 691 Island Mart on Church Street and S&S Island Market on Second Street both carry in food, clothing, and accessories. Whether you're looking to add some flair to your wardrobe or just want to learn more about their culture, each of these stores are worth checking out.
