Summer in Ottumwa and Wapello County is bursting with energy, creativity, and community spirit, offering something for everyone from June through August. Whether you're a fan of the arts, outdoor adventure, cultural celebrations, or classic county fair fun, the season is packed with events that bring the community together and welcome visitors from all over.

The excitement kicks off in June with the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of theatre and music that lights up stages across the area. Running June 6–29, the festival features a rich lineup of performances, including Sweeney Todd in Concert, the hilarious Lend Me a Tenor, and the family-favorite Annie. These performances are staged at venues like the Bridge View Center and the Temple of Creative Arts, showcasing local and regional talent in professional productions.

Just as the curtain rises on the arts festival, the city turns up the volume for the Ottumwa Pride Block Party on June 7. Held at The Beach Ottumwa, this celebration of love, identity, and inclusivity features live music, food, and a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that highlights the strength and joy of the LGBTQ+ community.

From June 12–15, head to Eldon for the Wapello County Fair, a beloved tradition filled with carnival rides, livestock shows, concerts, and grandstand events. It’s a perfect outing for families, fairgoers, and anyone who enjoys the charm of rural Iowa festivities.

Mid-June brings one of the area’s most iconic events: the Ottumwa Pro Balloon Races, soaring into town June 18–22. The skies over Ottumwa will be filled with colorful hot air balloons, with daily launches, night glows, a carnival, fireworks, and live music turning the event into a magical spectacle for all ages.

Amid the festivities, Ottumwa also takes time to reflect and honor with its Juneteenth Celebration on June 19 at Central Park. This important day commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and is marked with music, performances, and community-focused activities that celebrate freedom and unity.

Independence Day weekend brings the rodeo spirit to town with the Greater Ottumwa Rodeo, held July 4–5. Expect thrilling events like bronco riding and barrel racing, all wrapped in a patriotic atmosphere that celebrates both the sport and the holiday.

On July 12, downtown Ottumwa transforms into a hub of creativity for Main Street Ottumwa’s Bizarre Bazaar, an eclectic market featuring local artists, makers, and entertainers. This vibrant event offers a great opportunity to discover handmade goods and support small businesses, all while enjoying live music and family-friendly activities.

Gearheads and car lovers will want to mark their calendars for Midwest Ford Fest, taking place August 16–17 at the Jimmy Jones Shelter. Showcasing classic and modern Ford vehicles, the event is a dream for enthusiasts and includes vendors, food, and entertainment.

Throughout the summer, Ottumwa keeps things fresh and local with weekly and monthly markets. The Wapello County Farmers Market runs every Monday and Thursday from June through September, offering locally grown produce and homemade goods. In addition, the Ottumwa Community Market is held on the second and fourth Saturdays each month, providing even more opportunities to support local vendors and enjoy the community vibe.

With so many events filling the calendar, Ottumwa and Wapello County promise a summer full of fun, connection, and celebration. Whether you're here for a weekend or all season long, there’s no shortage of reasons to get out and enjoy the sunshine.
